4-H Science Toolkit Policy
Description of Project: 4-H Science Toolkits provide an experiential learning opportunity for youth in Maine by providing materials needed to successfully complete science-based activities. Groups and youth develop an interest in science through hands-on learning. Youth learn life skills through completing these projects. They can study the process of science, engineering, technology, and math while working as a team to ensure the success of their project. Toolkits are available from the Lisbon and Orono UMaine Extension Offices. Transportation may be available for kits to and from UMaine Extension County Offices statewide.
Guidelines for Participation:
All borrowers are responsible for replenishing consumable materials used during their project.
If equipment is returned damaged or missing, or if consumable materials are not replenished, the borrower may incur the cost to purchase new equipment/materials. The borrower may also have future borrowing privileges revoked.
Borrowers are expected to fill out two brief forms upon return of the kits, indicating numbers and general demographics of youth participants, and a pre-return checklist of supplies.
Kits should be reserved as far in advance as possible. When you inquire about reserving a kit, please allow five business days for a response.
Kits are available for sign out for up to one month at a time (some extensions apply). A return date will be agreed upon prior to the reservation being approved. Plan accordingly to return the kit, as another borrower is likely waiting to use it.
It is recommended that photo release forms be signed for any photographs taken that could be in public view. Help to share your story, please share your pictures (and release forms) with us when you return the 4-H science toolkits.
We appreciate it if youth and/or facilitators fill out the evaluation forms provided.
Feedback on activities is encouraged!
Participants are invited to make a donation to cover the cost of curriculum and equipment maintenance. This helps to ensure the continuation of the project for years to come. See included instructions in the binder for details.

Planning to Participate:
There are a limited number of kits available from the University of Maine Cooperative Extension office. Participants will need to reserve their kits ahead of time with office staff. To reserve a project kit, contact your County Cooperative Extension office, or email 4-Hscience@maine.edu.
Plan ahead! These kits are popular and may not be immediately available. Things to consider before the start of the project might include:
Youth meeting times (frequency, date and time)
4-H volunteer or adult supervision (many activities require assistance and supervision from adults)
Travel time to pick up and return 4-H science toolkits
Is the season or weather a factor?
Feedback on our toolkit program can be sent to 4-Hscience@maine.edu
